Parvana vive hacinada con su familia en la habitación de un edificio maltrecho en Kabul. Su padre, un profesor de historia que perdió su trabajo y su pierna debido a un bombardeo, se gana la vida leyendo cartas y vendiendo las últimas pertenencias que poseen, hasta que un día lo arrestan. Cuando el único hombre con permiso para trabajar y transitar solo en la calle es recluido en la prisión, la vida de Parvana, de su madre y sus hermanos se transforma. ¿Acaso quedarán en el desamparo?

Parvana lives crammed with her family in the room of a dilapidated building in Kabul. Her father, a history teacher who lost his job and his leg due to a bombing, makes a living reading letters and selling the last of his belongings, until one day he is arrested. When the only man in their family with permission to work and walk alone on the street is confined in prison, the life of Parvana, her mother and her siblings is transformed. Will they be left helpless?
